Dyspareunia (Mona Lisa Laser System)

Dyspareunia is the medical term for pain during sexual intercourse. The pain can happen before, during, or after sex and may feel sharp, burning, aching, or deep pressure. It can occur at the vaginal opening (superficial dyspareunia) or deeper inside the pelvis (deep dyspareunia).

The MonaLisa Touch laser system is a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment option increasingly used to address dyspareunia. Rather than relying on hormone therapy, the MonaLisa Touch uses fractional CO₂ laser technology to gently stimulate the body’s own healing response. A specially designed probe delivers controlled laser energy into the vaginal wall, creating microscopic “micro-injuries” that trigger new collagen, elastin, and blood vessel growth in the mucosal tissues. This process helps restore the structure, moisture, and elasticity of the vaginal lining, improving natural lubrication and reducing friction during intercourse.

Treatments are typically performed in our office, take about five to ten minutes, and don’t require anesthesia. Most protocols involve three sessions spaced several weeks apart, and many patients notice improvements in symptoms like dryness, irritation, and pain during sex after the first few treatments. There’s minimal downtime, and most women can return to normal activities shortly afterward.

Clinical studies on similar fractional CO₂ laser therapies have shown significant improvements in symptoms and sexual function, including reductions in dyspareunia and enhanced lubrication and tissue health. However, research is evolving, and response can vary by individual.

While many women find relief with the MonaLisa Touch, it’s important to discuss options with our doctors to determine if it’s right for your specific situation, and to understand potential benefits, risks, and alternatives.
