Post Menopausal Atrophy (Mona Lisa Laser System)

Postmenopausal atrophy—now often called genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM)—is common after estrogen levels decline. Thinning of the vaginal and vulvar tissues can lead to dryness, burning, itching, pain with intercourse, spotting, recurrent urinary discomfort, and changes in overall vaginal health. First-line care often includes moisturizers, lubricants, pelvic floor support, and—when appropriate—local vaginal estrogen or other prescription options. For patients who cannot use hormones, prefer to avoid them, or want additional symptom support, we offer the MonaLisa Touch laser system.

The MonaLisa Touch is a fractional CO₂ laser designed to deliver controlled micro-pulses of energy to the vaginal mucosa. The goal is to stimulate a localized healing response that may improve tissue hydration and elasticity over time. Treatments are performed in-office, typically without anesthesia, and usually take only a few minutes. Many protocols involve a short initial series (often three sessions spaced several weeks apart), followed by periodic maintenance depending on symptom return.

Patients may experience temporary warmth, mild swelling, watery discharge, or light spotting for a day or two afterward. Most clinicians recommend avoiding intercourse, tampons, and hot tubs for a brief recovery window. Outcomes reported by practices and some clinical studies include improvement in dryness, irritation, and discomfort with sex, with some patients also noting fewer urinary symptoms—though individual results vary.

It’s important to know that evidence quality and regulatory guidance around vaginal “rejuvenation” lasers has been debated, and these treatments may not be covered by insurance. A thorough evaluation is essential to rule out infections, dermatologic conditions, and other causes of symptoms, and to discuss benefits, risks, alternatives, and expectations based on your medical history and goals.
